Ely Residence

A 1,200sf addition to this 1922 Mediterranean Revival home in the Old Towne Orange Historic District followed Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties to preserve and protect the original street view from the front. “The house looks like the original 1,400sf house from the front, but it keeps on going back from that view,” explains architect Doug Ely, who lives here. “If you were to look at the side, it goes on and on. You would never know it because we maintained the scale and proportions visible from the street.”

Mediterranean arches like the one gracing the front porch are seen throughout – as the shape for front yard planters, in a decorative alcove in the kitchen, over the stove’s range hood, in doorways and elsewhere. What was a 1,400sf, 2-bedroom, 1-bath home is now 2,650sf with 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, a modernized kitchen, great room and a recreational room.
